Went there for the first time last week. Such a great cute little spot. Coffee was very well done and my breakfast was so fresh and full of flavor - I will be back for sure.
Still great after all these years. We love Porgie
The moment you walk in, you have a feeling of warmth. The chairs are comfortable and the people are friendly. The outside area is very relaxing especially in spring and summer. Menu is easy to read and service is excellent.
Like walking into an old country cottage, you are treated to an exciting menu that seems to meld perfectly with that sunday morning relaxed feel. Enjoy the Eggs with avocado, just brilliant
Beautiful and great atmosphere. Staff are fantastic
With a relaxed atmosphere, lovely collection of things on the walls and the warm energy radiating from the satisfied patrons, friendly staff and kitchen crew, you know that even before you open a menu; you're in for a treat. The comfortable chairs and evocative menu have you coming back for seconds and thirds, and as if the dining experience wasn't enough why not buy a scrumptious little something and take it away.
Great food, great place and friendly staff........ love to go again and again.
LOVE, love, love Porgie and Mr Jones - The staff are pretty hot too. Gets busy though
Fantastic coffee, ambience and very friendly staff...
Briagolong to Melbourne To Auburn Rd 250km drive just to eat there... Is worth the drive ....
This cafe is worth the drive from Bairnsdale vic just to get breakfast!
Love this cafe, especially the poached eggs they're eggselent!
OK so lets be honest… the inner eastern suburbs of Hawthorn, Camberwell etc are well known as wealthy areas that are a little bit on the bland side. I mean half of the shire is a dry zone! (Thank you ancient prohibition laws), furthermore there is a prolonged drought of decent restaurants at reasonable prices with most lacking the cohones to drift outside of their conservative comfort zone. Well that’s until a little Dutch bird told me that a local café was putting on set menu dinners two nights a week for $65 a head including corkage. Hats off goes to the staff for providing such a warm atmosphere and personalized service which unfortunately in most cases one would have to cross the Yarra for.
Amazing coffee, service and atmosphere. I love this place; by far my favorite venue in Melbourne!
The rockstar cafes come and go, and are all over the press, but for me, Porgies remains a classic, always pumping little cafe in the burbs. My fave in town :)
Awesome cafe; certainly one of Melbourne's best breakfast spots.
We live over the "other side" of the river, but make the trip over to Porgies most weeks for their smashed avocado on toast breaky dish. It is amazing. Coffee is always excellent and staff are so friendly, especially once they get to know you. We just wish Mr Jones would open up over our side!
We came here on the weekend for their famed scrambled eggs, and they were truly to die for... coffee also excellent (latte and flat whites) a great find, we will definitely be back
Just think porgies is the bees knees; we love it, and head there for breakfast as often as possible. The avocado and mushroom dish is sublime; But please re-open the courtyard.
Porgies is just a brilliant cafe - so local and so friendly, we just love it. The only problem is that it's too busy now so its hard to get a table, though they did just open a courtyard out the back and you can even take your dogs out there now through the side gate, which is fantastic. Their avocado dish is legendary..
we have been to porgie + mr jones' several times, and fell in love with it. so much in fact that we had our wedding there. We had 70 people for a stand up cocktail party, and I really dont hink there was anyone who did not comment on what an amazing little place this cafe is. The owners have really nutted out the true meaning of hospitality.. Porgie + mr jones is our second home!!! the only problem now, is getting a table on the weekend!!! Glad to see so many great reviews posted on your website about it!
FINALLY!!! a great cafe find in hawthorn - auburn rd, just near the corner of Riversdale. A friend just happened to stumble across it on its first day of opening last week! We went there for breakfast and had an awesome dish of poached eggs with some kind of roasted red pepper pesto and hazelnut dukkah, my partner had the avocado with thyme mushies and house marinated fetta - so good to see a cool cafe doing INTERESTING vego dishes as well. The staff are young and groovy - the barista is cute, and makes a mean coffee - cool tunes, almost bohemian feel to it, but european at the same time - not very hawthorn, but thats WHAT we love about it.. we had to wait for a table - it currently only has about 4 tables and one communal table - anyway, I shouldnt be saying much more, as we want a table next weekend!!!!
A quiet time in the day and lack of display stock detracted from the potentially very homely and bohemian atmosphere making it a little sterile. Coffee was under extracted. I didn't stay for any food but the options were well presented. I look forward to revisiting Porgie + Mr Jones once it is a little more established.
A fantastic place for coffee, with minimal interior designs. Looks like a real coffee house - nice and small so you dont have to worry about overpowering noise. Service is always great, and the owner always keeps on smiling. The black feature wall works very well with the design. I wish them the best of luck, and success.
They plan to make this place bigger, and are waiting for permits - its only got about 20 seats at the moment, and we really liked the cute name - though not sure what it means - maybe the owners?. Coffee was excellent, with no bitterness or anything. It is a really cute cafe, serving different sort of foods, and even a few retro things - like silverside sandwich with house made tomato relish, or posh things like figs in proscuitto with goats cheese. We will look forward to our next visit - especially when they do the courtyard out the back.
Just stumbled past this hidden treasure in Hwathorn. The staff were very friendly and inviting and the food was lovely. I am a very discerning coffee drinker and my flat white didn't dissapoint! One of the best around. WELL WORTH A LOOK!
Cute little cafe we found in hawthorn. breaky all day and a groovy spot, though there was a few mothers there with a couple of screaming kids - argghhh.. my friend had the poached eggs with roasted capsicum pesto and hazelnut dukkah and I had the banana bread that was served with rosewater poached peaches and it was heaven. Coffee was excellently made, though as they were busy it did take awhile to get a second cup. Even though we live in South Yarra, we will definitely go back to porgies.
I've had been waiting to visit this cafe for a while since hearing nothing but glowing reports from a few girlfriends of mine, and must admit i'll be jumping on the porgie and mr jones bandwagon myself! On first impression the place is quite small, however beautifully decorated. I ordered the antipasto plate it was delightful, the cheese one of the best i've had. My flat white was faultless. It was served quickly, had a great full bodied flavor and very intricate rosetta. I can't wait to revisit p+mr j after their renovations but as it is this is truely one of melbournes finest new cafes. I reccomend it very highly.
We went here the other day on the recommendation of a friend - was great.. noisy though, but the right kind of noise.. buzzy. They have just opened up a couple of cute rooms at the back which were really shabby chic. our flat white had a perfect rosetta and they use a la marzocco - need i say more....? Highly recommended.
After reading all the comments on here, we went to Porgie and Mr Jones yesterday for brunch. The owner was there, (Mr Jones) and he was pretty funny, was sort of walking around singing in French - all the staff seemed to know everyone, it is really cute, and he gave me an extra chocolate custard tart complimentary. We will definately go back to Porgie.
We went to Porgies after seeing your recommendation in your latest magazine today, and though we had to wait for a table, the wait was well worth it. You have to try their avocado and mushroom dish, friends had told us about it - I would have to say that it would be the best breakfast dish in any cafe in Melbourne. Coffee was excellent, my flat white had a perfect rosetta, however my wifes espresso was a little too cool in temp. Groovy, urban feel - even though we are in our late 50's, we felt we fitted into this oasis of cool!!!! We cant wait to go back. PS - CREMA - we love your publication, and your new website is excellent.. well done. Theo
Real thought has gone into many aspects of this cafe. My pumpkin pide was perfectly delicious - (not a huge chewy unwieldy foccacia as in some places), with a little heat, a little green, beautiful goat's cheese and with a new flavour in every bite - and, crucially, not too oily! Excellent. The eggs were poached to perfection in vinegary water - boingy on the outside, liquid inside. The portuguese custard tart was opulent with its swathe of fresh cinnamon that I had thought would be nutmeg. My only quibbles were that the coffee was a little on the cool side for a day as freezing as today, and I wish ppl could do a FLAT flat white but the flavour was triffic. We had two each. Will definitely go back, though not when my companion has a headache- the 'buzz' is pretty substantial. N
