Would you expect to find a New Zealand cafe in Melbourne? It sounds unlikely, but that's what you get when you step into Batch. Owner Jason Chan hails from Kiwiland, and has stocked his eatery with produce from the land across the sea. "It's the stuff I love and enjoy", he explains. And a nostalgia trip for Kiwis away from home. Sandwiched between a kosher butcher and a kosher bakery on this street of predominantly Russian and Jewish character, Batch stands out with its raw, organic interior: layers of unfinished wooden boards, black-and-white tiles and interesting local art on the walls. Batch's clientele include local residents, work-from-home types and people on the way to and from the nearby train. And did we mention? The coffee's great, when you're in need of your caffeine fix (from Wellington-based Coffee Supreme).
I was disappointed by the coffee here. Only a couple times did I get a good cup and the 4 or 5 times since the coffee has been bitter and unpleasant. I must say though, only on a couple occassions Jason was the barista when I was there. Perhaps this makes a big difference to what you're going to drink.
Usually excellent, but went there recently, and the coffee tasted burnt.
Move over Wall, Batch is in town. Incredible doppio ristretto, passionate owner/barista. A rosetta on top of every latte/flat white. Incredible equipment, too; a hotrodded Robur and a souped-up Linea
I went searching for the best coffee in Melbourne, and boy, did I find it! Smooth, silky, heaven in a cup! These guys know their espresso.
