No. 3 in Crema Magazine's Top 5 Cafes in Sydney for 2009. We 'discovered' Campos seven years ago and others took up on our review that year, and in subsequent years. With their success has come growth - they've expanded to become one of Sydney's leading suppliers [to cafes?] of specialty coffee. Typically with a tangy, fruity flavour and hint of spice, their shots come to their peak with milk-based coffees, and since approximately 90% of Australians drink milk-based espresso, they've picked their niche well! It's always busy and the main complaint if often finding a seat. But we see its business as a just reward for their commitment to espresso excellence - Campos is still the benchmark by which others are judged! (Nov '08)
The coffee is excellent if you can cope with the pushy and arrogant clientelle. The vibe was so awful my girlfriend refuses we go there anymore.
used to be good, but now a little over-rated
I have to say that the ordering process is lacking in simple organisation. I went to Campos on Saturday morning (9/1/2010) and the place was very busy. It should be. I placed and order for a 1kg bag of Superior beans, and a takeaway coffee. I waited over 20 minutes, finally asking if there was a "x" coffee happening...they missed it... They missed it because they only record the type of coffee that has been ordered, then call it out and look around the whole shop for a "taker". I watched as 6 takeaways (single order) were put together, then the owner proceeded to call out, "takeaway for 6". When no one answered, he looked at the staff (two baristas who were flat strap and a useless helper who the owner kept prompting to go and check the tables etc etc etc). The owner of the 6 wasn't even in the shop, and walked in a minute later. A flat white sat uncollected for 15 minutes of the twenty I waited. Turned out to be mine, but without an extra shot. Suffice to way they made me a new one, and it was awesome. The moral of the story is, they would have a hell of a lot less stress if they took a name and marked it on the cups...take seconds to write a name...or use numbers...anything is better than watching 5 people all eagerly look as "small flat white with one is called out". I hope they listen. The coffee deserves the best service going.
Must say I'm disappointed. I live in Sydney and it's difficult to get a decent coffee. I will have to take more Melbourne holidays. Campos was better than most but if all you do is serve coffee it should be better than that. Im hoping it was a bad day (the line was long ???)
The service was dry and the crema was extremely thin. Not all it's cracked up to be!
Went there few days ago and ristretto was soooooo thin and tastes like water..... not as good as before... What happened??
Small shop with BIG coffee flavours
The best whole coffee experience in australia- without a doubt!
Consistently exceptional coffee. Completely unpretentious, extremely professional and swingin'!!!
'Coffee that cares'
This has to be the most consistent coffee maker in NSW. I have never had an ill coffee served to me. The flavour ad texture is fantastic. The cafe is tight but cool, especially sitting next to the coffee roaster. Ambience is great and the Jazz helps too! 6. All-round good.
Being a coffee nazi, i feel compelled to rate Campos as the best and most consistent coffee in sydney
The best consistently good cuppa in all Sydney. Coffee, Jazz, fresh roast, Newtown 9. Great coffee Good music and relaxed. No hot food just coffee
Simply the best, Sydney's current benchmark.
Constantly great coffee, great sweets (limited selection), great atmosphere
Baristas who take the time to make each coffee personal, explain coffee in detail and always have a smile for you
Great little cafe for a nice sit down coffee and a read of the newspapers or just to sit and chat
The best leaf shaped milk froth I have ever seen
One word, excellent! Orgasmic aroma, taste and presentation
This cafe is great! They are really into their coffee and not their food, but that is a good thing. I roast my own coffee and have a Bezzera BZ99 at home and find that they guys in campos are also more than willing to give advice on making coffee as well. A great place all round!
I see everyone here agrees it's the best coffee in town. They are right. And the sheer consistency is amazing too
Beautiful coffee, complete lack of bitter aftertaste gets my 2 thumbs up. Yee haw!
Thank God for Campos. Our first child was born at RPAH just down the road, and when not at the hospital I could be found warming a seat at Campos. Best coffee in Sydney without exception.
Consistently great coffee. A little gem hidden just off the main drag of Newtown. Sends a shiver down my spine every morning :D
Love the personal service (they remember name and preferences) and although the food is limited they do have the best brownies I've ever had! Besides, I'm not there to eat!
Doesn't matter how much you want a good coffee - even when its quiet - you won't be served if there is someone with you who isn't having one. Sydney's version of the soup nazi, "no coffee for you"!
Ristretto Heaven!
We went to sydney with Crema's issue "best cafe's in sydney" and WOW!! The coffee was perfection! we live in QLD the bench mark is very low compared to this. we wish we could fly to sydney just for this coffee! great job guys!!
The first time I went there they were so rude and snobby, but once they recognise your face they start to smile and eventually talk to you - amazing! However the coffee is yummy yummy yum and no matter how I'm feeling it is a definate pick me up and always top notch. Sometimes it does tend to taste a bit milky rather than coffee but overall great coffee. Wish they sold croissants too... then I'd only have to make one stop in the mornings!
