Welcome Matt.  I've already met you in another thread: great to see you posting and contributing right from the get go!  The more the merrier; which, looks spelled incorrectly.  We have some great sponsors here so why not check out their offerings also while you're here.  I haven't yet been disappointed in fact, every one of these guys that I've bought from have gone the extra mile despite having the best prices and product!  Welcome Matt and get into it!

Edit: just noticed that you have a store.. colour me embarrassed!

Edit Edit: I do love our sponsors here but and I've spent a pretty penny with some of them.

Hi, and nice to find this friendly forum.
A bit about me.
I'm still quite new to home roasting. Kicked off a bit over a year ago after sampling some of Ministry Grounds roasts, and wanting to do it myself.
A long time home brewer and distiller, ( strictly aromatherapy of course), the mad scientist in me couldn't wait to see what I could turn to toast. Most of it has turned out to be quite palatable actually, and certainly good enough to encourage further discovery. I enjoy travelling, and learning about what others can do.

Looking forward to making any contributions I can to this community.

Thank you. You are all very kind.
I'm suffering withdrawals at the moment. My main machine has been in hospital since Dec 21, awaiting an element replacement. The machine importer ceased supporting the product, so a very sympathetic gentleman in Melb has hand forged one for me. To try and bridge the gap, I picked up an old Boema single group from a cafe (where I should have left it). Had it re-wired and replaced an element but haven't extracted a bean yet. I've sourced a Grimac laUno volumetric 2nd hand from a girl in Perth. It's currently in transit. Getting by on a vintage AMA Milano, AeroPress, syphon, and a Breville Ikon. And now my San Remo grinder has hit the wall. Give me a break.

R&B
Of course I can do without coffee.

I am pleased to have found this forum and have enjoyed scanning the information in the various threads.

In the past I probably drank too much coffee and the quality left a lot to be desired but as the coffee journey has progressed the knowledge base has grown. The quantity of coffee consumed has reduced and the quality of coffee has improved.

I am lucky enough to be able to enjoy the excellent café’s in Melbourne and enjoy the range of coffee available.
Melbourne cafes have a variety roastings styles and brewing methods on offer so I am always keen to try new coffees and experience various brewing options and learn from the experience. It is a bit like surfing and trying to find the perfect wave!

As the coffee obsession has progressed I have accumulated a variety of brewing equipment including a Syphon, Aeropress, Giotto and a Bacchi stovetop and as I am sure you all understand there are other items finding their way onto the wish list.

Then the roasting bug kicked in and a new journey began !

The first roaster I had was the FZ-RR-700 Baby Roaster and I had no idea what I was doing. The first roast was sensational. It was beginners luck. I could not see the beans and I struggled to control the various stages of the roast. I could not get consistent results. It was not a good start and it could have been the end of the journey but I was hooked and moved on.
I suspect I will go back to a home brew version of this roaster style at some stage as I now have some idea of what to look for during the roast.

My preferred roasting method is a Corretto as I have good control over the roast. I use a $5 second hand bread maker from the Op Shop and a $20 Aldi heat gun that I control using an old theatre lighting dimmer. This allows me to control the temperature and rate of rise manually.
I monitor and record temperature using the CS Roast Monitor software and a K type thermocouple into the CS DMM.

I also have a Behmor and use this when I need a quick and simple roast to fill a hole in the bean supply.

I am happy with the Corretto but I would like to move to the next level with my roasting so I can increase the volume and have better chaff control etc

My other interests have included / include fly fishing, 4WDriving, bushwalking, amateur radio

I look forward to participating in the forum

Have a great day
Beanz

Hi all,
Name is Bryan. Currently living in Newcastle NSW, but have moved around a bit.
I have always liked a good coffee but this is the first time I have been able to convinced my Wife to buy a machine.
Our starting machine is a Breville BES900 and BCG800 smart grinder.

We are really enjoying making coffee and are still learning as we go. Best thing about being a n00b is each cup is better then the last.
It's been a rapid introduction in to the world of coffee for me and I am really injoying the process and outcomes.

Other interests besides coffee making (newest interest) is motorsport and computers/gadgets in general.

G'Day Bryan, welcome to Crema.
As Kelsey remarked, in the short time since its release the BES900 has developed an excellent reputation, good choice on your part.
Have only recently returned to Adelaide from a week in Newcastle, helping my daughter and her family settle into a new home, her husband (also a coffee freak) was recently posted there from Laverton, Victoria.
Thanks for taking the time to tell us a little about yourself.
Guess the next step is setting up a Corretto roaster. ;)

Cheers,

DB. :)

Ahhh Mcgee, I did wonder if you were around in one of the forums :)

AM I am around just quiet, yeah yeah shutup

I think I'm getting better, it might just be a stress thing where my body decided enough and shut down on me.

As AM said wait until the chat starts up again, we all have a ball chatting to each other and getting to know each other.  If you are interested there are a few of us in Newcastle that roast as well :)

G'day all, from Albany, centre of the glorious Great Southern region in WA.

I'm Dinsdale (of Monty Python fame) to all my friends. My kidz (cuckoos) have all grown up and flown the coup, so doing the "Darby and Joan" thing with my beautiful wife (Mrs Piranha  ;D).  I only do small amounts of casual work these days, though not necessarily by choice all of the time.  In my copious spare time I like to windsurf (still not very good at it I'm afraid), play with r/c model boats, shoot/fish/camp and do all of the above with my grandkidz.  I've also been very heavily into sailing and motorbikes in the past

I've not been too serious about my coffee until recently, although we had a Napolitana espresso machine for 13 years.  Recently (2 weeks ago) I bought a BES900/BCG800 and have begun to rue the wasted years already.  Been using up the last of the cheap(ish) pre-ground coffee, and, with some experimentation, even that's tasting almost acceptable.  A local roaster (The Naked Bean) is on my visit list for this week, to help get us started into real coffee.

Any'ow, that's me, in a nutshell.  I have so many questions to ask that I don't know where to begin, so I'm sure my name will pop up pretty regularly around the various threads.  Alas, it'll be a while before I'll be in any position to offer much advice about coffee.

Welcome.
I'm wondering how you earned you that nickname. Give our regards to Doug and I hope you are still managing to stay one step ahead of Snapper Organs and Norman.

Hi everyone! Glad to find out I'm not the only University graduate on here who has been seduced by the coffee industry!! I'm a 28 year old wifey and supermum  ;D and officially a secondary music teacher. I live in Toowoomba Qld, which actually has some really great little cafes dotted around the place. I started in hospitality about 12 years ago as a way to pay for my textbooks! But I just can't escape the allure of that little brown bean. In the last few years my eyes have been opened to so many possibilities within the world of espresso. After working hard as a barista for 12 years, and taking a bit of time off to look after my little ones, I am ready to courageously pursue my true dream of owning an exceptional coffee business. I know I probably sound like every other fledgeling disillusioned entrepreneur out there! But my husband and I want to spend the next couple of years doing research, saving our little tooshes off :o and practising some home roasting. I have learned that life is way too short to not live with passion! And coffee is that one thing that gets my tummy in knots with excitement - people think I'm crazy but I guess that goes with the territory?! Looking forward to gaining lots of wisdom and insight from this forum.
