Awwww, not so shiny now  :-*

A lot worse now... Not sure I will ever get it back in one piece

Boiler end plate off at one end, the holes are all scale, the boiler is full of MUD ?

Now, to remove the other end, and then to look at how to clean up and importantly to have the plates with the group mounting studs fixed.

My little drill press is no where good enough to manage the right sized vice and bracing to allow me to drill out and tap and replace the studs.

The Ally clamp rings are OK at one end and the other will need some cleaning up.

Need to find a good place for old fashioned gasket material of a couple of different thickness's... 1mm and 2mm and 3mm as well as some gasket glue.  Then to the bolt places to replace all the bolts and nuts..

Some small bead blasting (done on my system), some wire brush work (me) , clean (citric acid) and re assemble...

The groups, will be the pain re correct O-rings / seals and of course the actual pull down and clamping to re assemble..

Over all a few weeks and maybe not too much $$$.

Pics, will come maybe... In dribs and drabs...

Dammed weather, flower-pots and saucer and weeds doing too well with lack of maintenance.

WOW~~NICE MACHINE AM!!

I was struggling between my Giotto and my thesis, I did not find AM got a fantastic machine.
Although I did not really have the knowledge how good the lever machine is.
But as a newbie, I can understand it must be bloody GOOD!!

Off topic but  I'm pretty sure these guys supplied gaskets for a fluid bed kiln exhaust upgrade I worked on a few years ago - some if the gaskets operated at +1000 degC and the flange OD's were around 1700mm - big & hot! from memory they were a pleasure to deal with.

The machine is stripped and in bits all over the floor and shelves and when I start to put it together...  I will hate my self for not taking enough pictures

Have had to drill out and replace studs on the boiler group flanges and just do lots of minor cleaning and removal of some surface rust etc.

I am not going to fully strip and soak and descale every item...

This project is about getting an old solid clunker back up and running...

Besides, it is after all a very basic machine and has the older commercial clean lines.  It is not one of the perceived classic old style machine, with lots of exposed chrome and brass and fancy panels.

Wiring need to be re done as old and been a bit patchy with some previous repairs.

Tank float needs to be fixed and a new magnet for said system.

L/H group was working and I think some scale in the pipes was the reason for the R/H group not working.

Once it is back in one piece; I will re assess the groups and what is / might be involved in stripping and servicing.

As usual it will come back to obtaining seals / o-rings and maybe a spring or two if realy needed.

New bolts and Screws and Modern Gasket material obtained...

I can now dump that old hard asbestos material .....

Opps where was that warning that came with all the old machines...

Product made on the machine, may contain traces of asbestos  8)   But it's OK... your only ingesting it even if a bit breaks off... Besides, unless ya try and breath the fluid, it will not get in your lungs.

Bugger, knew there was a reason not to use a grinder and dremel to clean all the old gasket material off....  It's OK...  Been raining and the air is damp

Was it a 57 mm tamper you needed AM?
I have a 57 Espro that isn't needed and I'm sure we could come to a barter arangement.

Asbestos causes cancer. Smoking causes cancer. A single exposure to either won't kill. Try telling that to a school teacher who won't go into her (or his) classroom because it has asbestos in it  ::)

No No No, you got it all wrong AM.  It will be coming to my house!  :D

LaceHim....

You a firm interest in this machine ?

Looks like some good basic maintenance is all that was needed but it got a bit more from me.

Should be close to getting most of it cleaned up this weekend and all new gaskets cut and new bolts etc...

Then the following week or two an attempt at putting it back together...

After that I can get back to doing some more wood turning.  Sorry KK: but lack of space has meant all that work is on a back burner.

If and only if, another far fetched plan comes off; The cleaned and serviced 2 group LA CIMBALI  M15 leaver will be available to Crema Members... And hence the opening statement.

EDIT: Strike one for that...  Failed, but a good chance the LA CIMBALI will have to go at some stage  ::)

AM, it would depend on a few things.

Can it run on 10amp?
What's the condition like?

When you get it up and running let me know and we can discuss.

Running on 10A now but it's at the max limit.. A slight re wire and NO problems other than a bit longer to warm up..

Condition... Err by the time I am finished...  110% on when I got it and it was working then ....   Sort of...

I would suggest that while it is not needed, one new set of Lever Springs for one side and some seals and o-rings, if you were to want to push it hard or have in a shop...  For home and BBQ occasions = OK.

Just placed an order for about 80 Euro, plus shipping from a supplier of parts in the EU.

Was going to cost about $280US plus and then plus shipping from the USA  :o

AND if I tried here, well it would take me weeks to go through every page on coffeeparts.  Some items available but trying to find is just not worth the hassle.  And some would still have to come from OS. In addition the costs on some items are quite interesting... A few cents VS dollars.

Thus, log to the EU site, call up exploded views by model or by manufacturer and select and build your order. Save and come back late, after you realise you need other things  ??? .  All my bits from one supplier and less stress...

Excellent!  Makes sense that if a machine comes from Europe that'd be the best place to source parts... Especially the more obscure parts.  Can't wait to see the final product!  :thumb:

Mrs AM is pissed that I am spending too much time in the SHED  :pan

As to the finished product.. It should look like what it did when I bought it...

But it should work a little better and be working well for for a good few years to come....

This machine started life in a shop in Melbourne, then to Sydney and then purchased by another who has a few coffee  shop in Brisbane and then pass on to the previous owner as payment for services...

The Brisbane guy paid approx $3k for it and then had $2k spent on servicing etc...

All I can say is that the quality of work performed was typical of other jobs I have seen around.  Yes, the machine may work and have had  group sealed changed, but the misuse of thread tape and other sloppy work is astounding.

Then again, one has to expect that many service people do not have old school trade backgrounds and have little understanding of many of the most basic fitting / machining / mechanical and or old school instrumentation background.  Most today just understand the process to an extent and follow up with parts replacement....  If it does not seal then use what ever is handy from the local hardware....

Now I am no perfectionist and KISS comes to hand more often than not, but I do fear for the future...   The other day at work in a lab, the old guys were having a laugh... A new courier driver could not use one of the cars... Apparently he has never used a key to start and or open a car or the boot. Only ever known modern cars with fancy remote's and was stumped when he had to use one of the older fleet cars.....

Will be a bit further along on Sunday and will see about uploading some pics...  But at the end of the day, all the work and effort will be internal and about sustainability rather than BLING  :coffee2:

Ok, so now waiting for parts and getting frustrated as work is getting in the way  :pan

So covers off and lets get down to it.  And while I would love to cut into half; the saw bench is the only space left for me to work.

One of the boiler end rings was showing signs of water escaping...  Those old asbestos seals had finally given in.

A little build up on the float and the magnet sensor had all but dissolved...

While the outlets looked sort of ok from this side, almost all were closed off on the outer and the fittings were very scaled up internally.

All the studs had to be replaced on both ends and all holes re drilled as the mix of metals generate a bit of electrolysis.

A better shot of the other end and the elements.

NOTE: All studs had to be removed and in many cases I had to cut them off and then drill them out and re tap.

Boiler having a little soak time, prior to getting stuck into it with some very basic tools and some raw elbow grease.

Here is the frame sitting all naked and lonely.. ....  The frame was in good clean condition and the panels were not too bad either.  Paint work is faded but I will leave it as is.

Last but not least it sits as such waiting for all the new boiler studs and other parts to arrive.
